The clan

Clan Barrett was founded by the descendants of those soldiers who joined Strongbow in his invasion of Ireland in 1170. With two branches, the clan was settled in both County Cork and in County Mayo.

The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife, c.1854, Artist: Daniel Maclise. A traditional story from Irish history, from 1066. Strongbow, a Norman leader, captured the city of Waterford who married Aoife on the battlefield.

The Chief

Clan Barrett, at present, doesn’t have a permanent hereditary chief, as the would-be holder of this position is lost to history.

In service to the clan, Louis Barratt currently holds the role of Brehon (chief legal officer), tasked with deducing hereditary succession of the Chiefdom. Louis Barratt is also the current Baron of Irrus; the Barony of Irrus (also known as Erris) being the most senior title to have been held by members of Clan Barrett previously.
